How to get the best use of TECALEMIT’s DEF-Pro Hi-Flow Transfer Smart Packages

This is a question about our bulk Urea/Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) System transfer systems that recently came up and wanted to discuss in depth to shed some light on the subject.
Hello friends!!  When you are discussing a new project with a potential customer concerning the transfer of Diesel Exhaust Fluid /Urea with one of our systems; the  DEF PRO 6000™ or the DEF PRO 5000™ , it is imperative to understand the full scope of work.  For instance, the basics of the systems such as GPM’s, electric vs gas driven, length of hoses,etc., gives us only half the story.  Don’t get me wrong.. . that information is needed. However, with more complex projects, we need to look deeper and understand how the system will be ultimately used.
Let’s jump in! –  Let’s start by explaining the electrical basics of the DEF PRO 6000™  bulk urea / diesel exhaust fluid transfer system. The majority our systems are fitted with AC  pumps with either a 110v or 240v power requirement.  If you are considering placing one of our urea / diesel exhaust fluid skid systems on a delivery truck, making it work from a DC power supply source; then a few items will need to be looked at.  One of those items is the power electric cable, the gage, and length.  Why is this important?  Well, because the longer the electric cable powering up the system; the higher gauge it will need to be due to power losses.  This is one of many small items that need to be taken into account and therefore it is important to try understand the complete system scope. Moving on, if you find yourself at the point where an inverter needs to be in place to power up the urea transfer system; then you may want to look into a Pure Sine Inverter. We can start by answering, what is an inverter? An inverter is commonly known as a device whose main purpose is to convert DC power or Direct Current Power, typically found in batteries; into AC power or Alternating Current Power. So, what can you do with an inverter? Well, for starters the power that is stored in a battery for example; can be used to power up other devices that would typically require AC power.  Furthermore, we need to clarify that there are many types of inverters and the one that we are covering here is the Pure Sine Inverter.  Power from DC to AC can vary and we can explain this from a rough or choppy sine wave to a smooth sine wave.

The commonly found choppy sine wave modified inverter will generate a simple wave that when illustrated looks more square then the standard smooth pure sine wave.

 It is obviously more difficult to produce a smooth AC current than the standard modified sine inverter .  However, you can still power up most consumer electronic devices with a modified sine inverter.  It is a different story with industrial equipment, which we are about to learn.  It is different when you are being faced with sensitive and expensive devices.  If we take a look at the pump of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)/ Urea transfer skid system, the first thing that will happen is that the pump will spike amperage at start up, and will rely on the smooth sine wave to start up and keep working properly.

So, in order to maximize energy output, it is important to select an inverter with these points in mind: A) Hi efficiency B) Low stand by losses C) High Surge Capacity  D) Low harmonic distortion.

One of the most apparent differences between a Modified Sine wave inverter and a Pure Sine Inverter., aside the  fact that a Pure Wave Since can operate sensitive electronic devices requiring high quality waveform with little harmonic distortion, is that they have an excellent high surge capacity.  What does that mean?  Simple, it means that they can exceed their rated wattage for a very short amount of time. This will help your pump motor to start without a hiccup, even while drawing up to six times its rated wattage during startup.

So, remember to understand the complete project scope and how the system is ultimately going to be used on the field.  Check with our internal technical team, and also check with your installation team; and don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions.  We will let our experienced team provide you the support for a smooth start up.
